Health & Safety Policy — Gardening Services Mitcham
Policy statement: Gardening Services Mitcham is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety for all employees, subcontractors and members of the public affected by our garden maintenance and landscaping activities. This policy provides a clear framework for safe working practices across our service area and sets out responsibilities, procedures and controls to minimise risk.
Scope: This health and safety policy applies to all routine and specialist operations including hedge cutting, lawn care, pruning, planting, hard landscaping and safe use of powered equipment. It covers on-site work, transit between jobs and workshop-based maintenance activities.
Responsibilities: Management is responsible for establishing and resourcing the safety framework; supervisors must ensure that staff follow safe systems of work. Employees and contracted gardeners are required to co-operate with safety measures, report hazards and take reasonable care for their own and other people’s health and safety.
Risk assessment and safe systems of work
All tasks are subject to documented risk assessments that identify hazards, evaluate risk and define control measures. Written safe systems of work are issued for activities with higher risk, including work at height, use of chainsaws, stump grinding and pesticide application.Assessments are reviewed whenever work methods change, new equipment is introduced or after an incident. Control measures follow the hierarchy of risk control: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Personal protective equipment: Job-specific PPE such as safety boots, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, gloves and cut-resistant garments must be worn when required. PPE is supplied, maintained and replaced as necessary to ensure effectiveness.
Equipment, maintenance and inspections
All machinery and tools are maintained to manufacturer guidance and inspected before use. Portable appliance testing, documented servicing and pre-start checks reduce the risk of mechanical failure. Defective equipment is removed from service until repaired or replaced.Safe operation training is mandatory for powered tools and equipment. Operators must be familiar with guards, safety switches, vibration control and correct handling techniques to prevent injury and hand-arm vibration syndrome.
Hazardous substances (COSHH): Substances such as herbicides, pesticides, fuels and oils are managed under control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) principles. Material safety data sheets are available, storage is secure, and application follows manufacturer instructions and legal directions.
Manual handling: Teams are trained in safe lifting techniques and the use of mechanical aids where necessary. Risk assessments identify persons at increased risk and alternative arrangements are made to avoid manual handling injuries.
Work at height and access: Where pruning, tree work or structure repairs require working above ground level, safe access equipment is used and inspected. Only trained personnel carry out work at height, and fall-prevention measures are in place.
Traffic management and site public safety: We implement controls to separate pedestrians and vehicles, use signage and barriers where required and follow safe loading/unloading procedures. Vehicles carry spill kits and tools are secured during transit to prevent hazards on public roads.
Training and competence: Induction training covers company policies, emergency procedures and hazard reporting. Specific training is provided for machinery operation, pesticide application, chainsaw use, first aid and manual handling. Records of qualifications and refresher courses are maintained to ensure ongoing competence.
Incident reporting and investigation: All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences are reported immediately and recorded. Incidents are investigated to identify root causes and preventive actions; lessons learned are communicated across the team to reduce recurrence.
Emergency procedures: Emergency arrangements include first aid provision, emergency contact procedures and clear instruction for dealing with fire, serious injury or hazardous spill. First aid kits are available in vehicles and on site; nominated first aiders are identified for each job.
Monitoring, review and continuous improvement: The policy and its implementation are monitored regularly through inspections, audits and performance reviews. Management reviews safety performance and updates procedures as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, equipment or best practice.
Contractors and subcontractors: Any third-party providers working with our teams must comply with this policy. We assess contractor safety arrangements before engagement and monitor compliance during works to ensure collective responsibility for health and safety.
Commitment: Gardening Services Mitcham is committed to creating a safe working environment and protecting the wellbeing of everyone affected by our operations. This policy is endorsed at the highest level of management and is available to employees and relevant stakeholders to ensure transparency and adherence.
